HOW IT WORKS
Meet Mama Kowanna
Mama Kowanna is a dedicated community educator with over 25 years of experience, living in Minnesota's Twin Cities area. Her love for the written word began at the age of 13, fueling a lifelong passion for reading, literature, and education. Mama Kowanna has spent more than a decade with the Children’s Defense Fund Freedom Schools Program, which fosters a love of reading in children and youth. In various leadership roles within this program, she has championed literacy as a gateway to empowerment.
Throughout her career in public and charter school education, Mama Kowanna has advocated for student voices, real-world learning experiences, and self-motivated educational engagement. Her deep connection to reading and community has culminated in the creation of Mama Kowanna Intimate Reads & Experiences—a book club where members connect with local, new, and established authors before reading their works. The club also fosters a sense of community, providing a space for shared encouragement, love, and appreciation for each other’s unique gifts, talents, and personal experiences.
